Why Modern Life Feels So Overwhelming — And What Fiji Does Differently

In Between Two Worlds

I now base my life in Fiji, but from time to time, I find myself back in a city.

And every time I do, there’s one thing I notice immediately—
the overwhelming amount of information.

The Quiet Space to Think

In Fiji, what surrounds you is mostly nature.

There are occasional billboards or signs, but even then, there’s enough space—mentally and physically—to actually process what you see.

You might notice a sign and think, “That place looks nice, maybe I’ll go someday.”
And that thought has room to exist.

The Constant Flow of Input

But in a city, it feels completely different.

Without even realizing it, you’re exposed to an enormous amount of information at once.

As you walk down the street, there are layers of sensory input—
the smell of Italian food from one side, while across the street there’s a Korean restaurant catching your eye.

On public transport, advertisements fill every corner.
And now, with digital displays, the information never even stays still—it keeps changing, demanding your attention.

Before you can fully process one thought—
“That looks nice”
another appears—
“Oh, this looks delicious.”

Too Many Choices

Even something as simple as deciding where to eat becomes overwhelming.

There are too many options.
Too many choices. And without noticing, you’re constantly being pushed to decide.

The same goes for our phones.
We open them for a moment, and suddenly we’re surrounded by endless streams of content.

A Simpler Rhythm

Compared to that, life in Fiji feels incredibly simple.

You don’t often find yourself overthinking which route to take or what option is best.

Of course, people use smartphones in Fiji too.
But the number of decisions you need to make each day feels significantly lower.

And in that simplicity, you naturally find yourself more present—
more connected to your surroundings, to nature, and to people.

The Beauty of Both Worlds

Of course, there’s a reason cities are the way they are.

More information often means more opportunities—
more restaurants, more experiences, more choices.

There is a certain excitement in that.

When It Becomes Too Much

But after getting used to life in Fiji, I realized something.

The sheer volume of information in the city can feel overwhelming.

Having choices is enjoyable—
but at the same time, it can also be exhausting.

What Fiji Teaches You

Fiji may not have endless options.
You won’t always find everything you want.

But what it offers instead is something different—
a life that feels simple, grounded, and surprisingly fulfilling.

A place where less information doesn’t mean less life—
it often means more space to actually live.
