The Beginning of Winter, and a Little Spoon Made of Coconut

The Beginning of Winter, and a Little Spoon Made of Coconut

On Saturday morning, I visited the Vuda Market, a local market held just once a month.

The venue is the oceanfront First Landing Hotel, where a stunning view of the sea opens up before you.

Out past the jetty, a tiny island floats in the water—a favorite spot where the children love to run around freely.

There is also a shaved ice stall at the market that the kids look forward to every single time.

However, Saturday was a bit overcast and the breeze felt notably cool.

Yet, determined to have their treat, the children kept happily scooping their shaved ice, shivering slightly with every bite.

Watching their sweet, persistent smiles brought a warm grin to my face.

Fiji is often imagined as a land of endless summer, but we are now entering the heart of winter.

The mornings and evenings have become quite chilly, and reaching for long sleeves has become part of our daily routine.

Wrapped in this seasonal chill, after the kids had finished playing, we gathered for lunch.

Since various local vendors sell homemade dishes at the market, each of us picked our favorite food to bring over to the hotel's terrace.

To accompany our meal, we also ordered a chilled fresh coconut.

The coconut served to us that day was filled to the brim with refreshing juice, and the flesh inside looked incredibly promising.

After enjoying its light, natural sweetness, I wanted to eat the white flesh too, so I asked a staff member if he could crack it open for me.

When it was returned to me, I experienced a beautiful little moment of wonder.

A small slit had been cut near the edge of the coconut shell. With a warm smile, the young man gently tore it off with his fingers, handed it to me, and said, "Here, use this to scoop it out."

It was a beautiful, makeshift spoon crafted entirely from the coconut shell itself.

Without relying on manufactured plastic tools, they simply use a piece of nature right in front of them to live resourcefully.

It felt much softer against the lips than any regular spoon, and its simple design made it incredibly easy to use.

I was deeply moved by this quiet piece of everyday wisdom.

The chilled white coconut flesh had a wonderfully tender texture and tasted absolutely exquisite.

Stepping away from a world overflowing with convenience and surrendering to the natural rhythm of the island.

It was a beautiful Saturday, grounded in the gentle, big-hearted wisdom that the people of Fiji have passed down through generations.
