A Coconut Bowl Found in Nadi Town: My Creative "Take" on an Incense Holder

A Coconut Bowl Found in Nadi Town: My Creative "Take" on an Incense Holder

Since I started living in Fiji, there is one thing that has woven itself deeply into my daily routine: incense.

Fiji is home to a vibrant Indo-Fijian community.
Step into a local supermarket or a small shop selling prayer items (puja) for Hindu rituals, and you’ll find a surprisingly vast array of incense.

For someone like me who loves home fragrances, these places feel like a treasure trove. However, I did face one small dilemma.

No matter where I searched, I couldn't find an incense holder that truly resonated with me.
Out of necessity, I had been using a small ordinary dish from my kitchen.

While enjoying my favorite scents, a part of me always hoped that one day I would stumble upon the perfect incense holder.

Beautifully Imperfect

Then one day, while walking through the bustling streets of Nadi Town, something caught my eye.

It was a small cup made from a coconut shell—a bilo—traditionally used by locals to pass around and share kava.

With its round, cozy shape and the unique warmth of the natural wood grain, it felt just right.

"Ah, if I burn incense in this, it would look beautiful."
Driven by intuition, I picked it up. But being a natural coconut, the bottom was completely round.
Most of them rolled right over, unable to stand properly on a flat desk.

As I stood there contemplating the bowl, wishing it could balance just a little better, a shop staff member approached me with a warm, friendly smile.
"You know, if you just sand down the bottom a bit, it’ll stand perfectly!"

It’s not a flawless, factory-made product.
But that’s exactly why you can add a little touch of your own hands to make it fit into your life.

"Fixing and shaping what you already have to make it work"—feeling the beauty of this genuinely Fijian mindset, I picked out the one that seemed most willing to stand on its own and brought it home with me.

Bringing the Fijian Breeze Into Daily Life

Back home, I immediately placed an incense stick into the coconut cup.
The natural curve of the bowl gently catches the falling ash.

The deep, rich texture of the dark brown shell blends beautifully with the wisps of smoke, instantly softening the atmosphere of the room.

It blends into my interior so much better than the temporary dish ever did.

A coconut cup meant for locals to gather around and enjoy chatting (talanoa) together. Now, this very cup serves as an incense holder, grounding my quiet, relaxing moments.

This little encounter in Nadi Town reminded me of the simple joy of finding new meaning in everyday objects.
Today, as a gentle Fijian breeze blows through, I light my favorite incense once again.
Are there any unexpected "creative takes" that bring warmth to your own home?
