Is Fiji Safe? What You Should Know Before Visiting

When people plan a trip to Fiji, one question often comes up:

“Is Fiji safe?”

As someone who has been living in Fiji for around two years, I personally feel that Fiji is a very safe country overall.

Of course, like any destination in the world, there are things travelers should be aware of. But compared to many countries, Fiji has a calm and peaceful atmosphere, and serious violent crime is not something you hear about often.

One of the things many visitors notice after arriving is how friendly and relaxed people are. Locals are often welcoming, happy to chat, and willing to help if you need directions or assistance.

That being said, basic travel precautions are still important.

Be Careful Around Nightlife Areas

Areas around bars, clubs, and nightlife spots can become crowded, especially late at night when people are drinking.

While Fiji is generally peaceful, it’s still important to stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings. Small thefts or pickpocketing can happen in busy areas, just like in many tourist destinations around the world.

If you are going out at night, it’s best to:

  • Avoid walking alone late at night
  • Keep valuables secure
  • Use trusted transportation when possible

The Biggest Thing to Watch Out For: Driving

Interestingly, the thing I personally feel travelers should be most careful about in Fiji is actually the roads.

Fijians are generally very kind and relaxed people — but driving styles can sometimes feel surprisingly fast or unpredictable.

You may notice:

  • Sudden lane changes
  • Fast driving
  • Narrow roads
  • Limited sidewalks in some areas

If you plan to rent a car in Fiji, it’s important to drive carefully and stay alert at all times.

It’s also quite common to see minor traffic accidents, so extra caution is definitely recommended.

Be Careful When Walking Near Roads

Even when walking, it’s important to pay attention to traffic.

Although Fijians are very kind and friendly people, that doesn’t always mean pedestrians automatically have the right of way on the roads.

Cars may not always stop for pedestrians in the way visitors from some countries are used to, so it’s important to stay alert when crossing streets or walking near traffic.

Sidewalks can also be limited depending on the area, especially outside major tourist zones.

So, Is Fiji Safe?

Overall, yes — I personally believe Fiji is a very safe and peaceful destination for travelers.

As long as you use common sense, stay aware at night, and are careful around traffic, most visitors have a wonderful and trouble-free experience.

Beyond the beautiful beaches and resorts, one of Fiji’s greatest attractions is the warmth of its people and the relaxed atmosphere that makes many visitors want to return again someday.

Bula and enjoy your Fiji adventure 🌴🇫🇯
