Hiroshi Taniguchi: A Revolutionary Leader Making a Difference in Fiji

“Helping others”—this simple yet powerful belief has been at the heart of Hiroshi Taniguchi’s journey in Fiji.

Creating a New Path in English Education

In 2004, Taniguchi founded Free Bird Institute Ltd, an English language school in Fiji. His goal was to make English education more accessible and affordable. By utilizing vacant school buildings due to Japan’s declining birthrate and employing local Fijian teachers who had lost their jobs, he not only provided education, but also created jobs and strengthened communities.

Today, the institute has grown into one of the world’s largest English language schools, with over 20,000 graduates from around the globe.

Rebuilding a National High School

In 2010, Taniguchi was entrusted by the Fijian government with the task of rebuilding a struggling national high school. Under his leadership, the once chaotic school was transformed into one of the top six academic institutions in the country and even became a national rugby champion.

He introduced an innovative model—welcoming international students whose tuition helps fund the school. This approach not only made education free for local students, but also created a unique cross-cultural learning environment where Japanese students gained not only English skills, but also new values and perspectives from their Fijian peers.

Transforming Lives Through Study Abroad

When asked what made him happiest about his work, Taniguchi shared:

“Seeing a student who was once withdrawn in Japan become cheerful and confident in Fiji—guiding their parents around town in English when they visit. That transformation is priceless.”

Fighting Cancer, Still Moving Forward

Even after being diagnosed with stage IV terminal cancer, Taniguchi’s dedication never wavered. While undergoing chemotherapy, he took steps to protect the future of his company by listing Free Bird Institute Ltd on the South Pacific Stock Exchange—a groundbreaking move in Fiji.

Now a Fijian citizen, Taniguchi is preparing to run for parliament, aiming to contribute further to the country’s political and economic development.

A Life of Purpose and Revolution

Whether through education, community development, or business innovation, Taniguchi’s mission has always been clear: to help others. In Fiji, few names are as widely respected as Hiroshi Taniguchi.
